Big Red Defense Dominates Again; Singer, King Spark 54 Point Offense
For the second week in a row the Parkersburg Big Red defense came through with another sterling performance in a 54-14 win Friday night over visiting John Marshall.
While Bryson Singer and Carter King provided the offensive fireworks it was again the defense that shone brightest as they held a team that came into the contest averaging 47 points per game and limited them to just one offensive touchdown.
The 10th ranked Monarchs (now 5-3) were rushing for 335 yards per game, had one 1,000 yard rusher who was averaging 10 yards per carry and another with over 800 yards. But when the game was over the visitors from the northern panhandle could show just 92 yards on the ground and running standout Dalton Flowers had been held to 47 yards on 16 carries and his mat Alex Burton to just 16 yards on nine carries.
Carter Mills with nine tackles and an interception along with Jake Barnette and Casey Mahoney with eight tackles each led the way. The gang-tackling Big Reds also limited John Marshall to 68 yards in the air on five completions in 13 attempts with Keenan Curry having the other interception which he returned 60 yards for a touchdown.
Junior standouts Singer and King led the way by accounting for six touchdowns between them. Singer threw for four scores, three of them to King, and ran for the first two on long-range scampers of 54 and 79 yards. The PHS quarterback finished with a whopping 219 yards rushing on just 10 attempts. He had 222 yards on eight carries in the first half alone. In the air the 6-foot-3 standout was 11 of 17 for 217 yards as he found King on passes of 27, 20 and 59 yards and Jordan Martin on a 31 yard scoring toss. King, who caught five passes for 144 yards, also ran for a touchdown from three yards out.
Singer's total of 436 yards in offense broke a 32-year-old record for single game output, bettering the mark of 414 yards set by Rick Marshall in 1988.
The 13th ranked Big Reds, who are certain to move up in the ratings this week although their next opponent is uncertain, upped their record to 5-2 by amassing 559 yards on 57 offensive plays.
It took PHS just two plays to set the tone for the evening as Singer faked a handoff, took off around left end and simply outran the Monarch secondary to cover 54 yards for a touchdown just 32 seconds into the game. Casey Stanley booted the first of six extra points.
Justin Waybright had two sacks on the first three offensive plays by the Monarchs.
After an exchange of punts, John Marshall threatened with a 14-play, 59-yard drive but that moved to the Big Red 21 but ended when Mills intercepted a pass at the four yard line and ran it out to the PHS 21.
On the very next play Singer showed his speed again by keeping up the middle, then broke to the right sideline and went 79 yards for the score to make it 13-0 with 1:45 left in the first quarter.
Early in the second quarter PHS reached paydirt again on a three yard run by King that culminated an 8-play, 82-yard drive that was highlighted by Singers’ 21 yard scamper on the very first play.
After a fourth-down sack by Austin Fleming (one of five sacks on the night by PHS) gave PHS the ball on its own 40, it took four plays to score as Singer ran for 10, passed to Michael Owen for 24 and then found Martin on a slant pass over the middle for the final 31 yards for the touchdown. Stanley’s kick made it 26-0.
A 16-yard punt return by Curry to the John Marshall 39 set up TD number five, which took four plays and finished with the 27 yard pass to King.
The Big Reds had 404 yards in the first half while holding the Monarchs to 69. Singer had 351 yards combined rushing and passing.
After forcing a JM punt to start the second half, PHS took just 2:17 to score on a 57-yard, eight-play drive that ended on the 20 yard scoring strike to King to make it 40-0.
Curry’s pick-six came two minutes later as the speedster stepped in front of a Monarch pass along the right sideline and returned it all the way to make it 47-0.
A sack by Justin Waybright forced another Monarch punt and PHS scored in two plays to make it 54-0 with 2:53 left in the third quarter as King got behind the defenders to haul in a 59 yard scoring pass.
With a mercy-rule running clock in the fourth quarter, John Marshall was able to avoid a shutout thanks to a 38-yard pass and three plays later had another score as PHS freshman quarterback David Parsons was intercepted on a deflection which was returned 40 yards for a touchdown with 10:12 left in the game.
The Big Red second offensive unit was able to run out the final nine minutes of the game with a 16 play drive.
